Addiction Counseling Certificate

This 18-credit undergraduate academic certificate is for people interested in working with individuals and families affected by substance use disorders. The curriculum covers all the necessary educational requirements to be able to apply to take the exam to become a Certified Addiction Counselor. The exam is administered by the Connecticut Certification Board.

The academic certificate coursework also includes the required 300 hours of supervised fieldwork through which students build competencies for promoting and guiding recovery from substance use disorders. The fieldwork supervisor must be an active AADC, CAC, CCS, CCDP, SCCS, or LADC. The fieldwork must be specific to substance use disorders. No less than 10 hours of fieldwork must be completed in each performance domain as specified in the Requirements for the Certified Additional Counselor credential.

This academic certificate program can be completed as a stand-alone certificate, without matriculating into a degree program.

By taking the electives specified in the plan of study, the certificate can be completed as part of the human service’s bachelor’s degree.
